{"id":6567,"date":"2025-12-10T19:05:05","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T18:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qltlex.com\/?p=6567"},"modified":"2025-12-10T19:08:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T18:08:12","slug":"food-fraud-and-misleading-labels-tougher-rules-to-protect-food-quality-and-consumers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qltlex.com\/en\/news\/non-categorizzato\/food-fraud-and-misleading-labels-tougher-rules-to-protect-food-quality-and-consumers\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Fraud and Misleading Labels: Tougher Rules to Protect Food Quality and Consumers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"2241\" data-end=\"2504\">On December 9, 2025, <em data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2279\">Huffington Post<\/em> published an article by attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/qltlex.com\/en\/team\/maurizio-de-salvo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"2313\" data-end=\"2334\">Maurizio De Salvo<\/strong><\/a> describing a new bill \u2014 the \u201cagro-food protection act\u201d \u2014 aimed at strengthening rules against food fraud and misleading labeling.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2506\" data-end=\"2790\">The draft law introduces two criminal offences: <strong data-start=\"2554\" data-end=\"2570\">\u201cfood fraud\u201d<\/strong>, punishable by 2 months to 1 year in prison plus fines, and <strong data-start=\"2631\" data-end=\"2672\">\u201csale of food with misleading labels\u201d<\/strong>, carrying penalties up to 18 months\u2019 imprisonment and fines reaching \u20ac20,000.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2792\" data-end=\"3163\">The reform aims to enhance transparency and traceability across the entire agri-food supply chain, safeguard the value of \u201cMade in Italy\u201d, and protect consumers from deceptive practices. It also provides for penalty scaling based on the severity of violation and company turnover \u2014 thus avoiding unfair burdens on small businesses.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3165\" data-end=\"3302\">This legislative package marks a major step forward for consumer protection and for reinforcing trust in the Italian food supply chain.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3304\"
